WHAT IS DANDRUFF:
Dandruff is a common skin condition. It's not harmful and you cannot catch it. Dandruff causes white or grey flakes of skin to appear on the scalp and in the hair. The flakes are often more noticeable in darker hair and if they fall from your scalp on to your shoulders. Your scalp may also feel dry and itchy.

LIFESTYLE TIPS TO GET RID OF DANDRUFF:
Let’s start with some lifestyle tips that you might want to try first. I will talk about medicated shampoo treatments a bit later on in the video.

The first one is that you might not be shampooing enough. If you use products in your hair and you’re not washing them out, you might be getting a build-up of those products on your scalp. So when you use shampoo, you want to make sure you apply it directly to the skin on your scalp and not just your hair. Really work up a nice lather so the shampoo can bind to those oils and products before you wash them out. For those of you who naturally have an oily scalp, you might need to wash your hair more often than you are now. You should see your dandruff get better pretty quickly with this tip.

Sometimes using fewer products in your hair like hair gel or hair spray could be the problem. So you might want to use a smaller amount of these products, try different brands or use ones that are alcohol-free so they don’t irritate or dry out your scalp.

And speaking of trying different products, you might want to consider trying a different shampoo. For example, baby shampoo is really mild and soap-free so it won’t dry out your scalp. Or invest in a good scalp moisturiser to stop you from getting a dry scalp and check if your dandruff improves as a result.

Now you might notice that your dandruff gets worse when you’re stressed, worried or anxious about something. So you can try managing your stress and anxiety levels by getting enough sleep, meditating or seeing a therapist. I’ve also got a video on anxiety with some helpful tips you can use straight away.

Cold weather can make dandruff worse too. So try wearing a hat and keeping warm. And if you’ve normally got short hair, you might want to grow out your hair a little bit, so it’s a nice natural insulator. Keeping your scalp warm also improves blood flow to the area. And having a good blood supply means you can keep your skin cells healthy and strong so they won’t shed as much.

And when it comes down to healthy skin cells, you need to be eating well on a daily basis. This will make sure you’re getting what your body needs to build the best skin cells it can which means less dandruff overall. So check you are eating enough foods with zinc, B vitamins and healthy fats like omega 3. These include foods like low-fat dairy, lean meat or chicken, oily fish like salmon, nuts and leafy green vegetables.

Also make sure you’re getting enough water. You want to drink about 6 to 8 cups of water each day to keep yourself hydrated and help make those skin cells the best they can be!

WHEN TO SEEK MEDICAL ADVICE FOR DANDRUFF:
So it’s really important to see a healthcare professional or dermatologist if you have tried a dandruff treatment for a month and it’s not working. This is because you might have something else that’s causing scalp drying, flakiness or irritation.

Also if your scalp is red, swollen, crusty, yellow or very itchy, you need to get it checked by a healthcare professional.
