Have you ever wondered "why" you have 🦵 numbness after knee surgery?
Today I will show you why you get that and why it's important to recognize it.
Patients don't like surprises! So it's good to know ahead of time that it is very likely there will be some numbness on the outside of the knee especially and that it is sensory only. You will not lose strength or function as a result of this happening and it happens to most everyone who has an incision down the center of the knee.
So, who is the culprit here? It is the infrapatellar branch of the saphenous nerve which pierces through the sartorious muscle and migrates laterally across the patella tendon to the lateral side of the knee. That nerve almost always gets injured with knee surgery requiring a midline incision.
