Acute inflammation- 3 lab markers

Acute Phase Reactants are inflammatory proteins that elevated when there is tissue stress, infection, food proteins and psychological stress.

1. CRP C-Reactive Protein 0-3
Half life is about 4-7 hours. Lab range 0-3
CRP will rise within 4-6 hours after initial onset of stressors and peak within 36-50 hours.

2. ESR 0-32
Acute phase reactant that causes an increased ESR is fibrinogen
Increases within the first 24 hours and can remain elevated for days to weeks because fibrinogen’s ½ life is approximately 100 hours

3. Ferritin
Lab range 12-300. Ideally below 150
Can stay elevated for 6-8 hours. Do not take iron when ferritin is elevated because it can create a Fenton reaction which increases inflammation. Elevated ferritin doesn’t mean iron overload. With Iron overload there will be an increase in iron saturation.

Ferritin over 1000 and low albumin think possible malignancy.
