Today we’re going to talk about normal hair loss vs. pathological hair loss. A person has hundreds of thousands of hairs growing on their head at any given time. The life cycle of a hair is about 2-5 years. In a normal situation, an average person will lose 50-100 strands of hair every day.
If you run your fingers through your hair with a gentle tug, you should see between about 1-10 hairs in your hand—this is normal. But, if you keep running your fingers in the same spot and your hair keeps coming out, there are several reasons why this could be happening.
Potential causes of hair loss:
• A hormonal change (high estrogen, low progesterone, high DHT, low thyroid, high cortisol)
• Certain medications
• Lupus
• Nutrient deficiencies
Nutrient deficiencies that could potentially cause hair loss:
• Vitamin D
• Vitamin B12
• Vitamin C
• Vitamin A
• Zinc
• Biotin
• Selenium
