In this video, I interview Wounded Warrior Tim Payne about how being on the ketogenic diet has benefited him. In 2011, Tim lost both legs when he stepped on an IED (improvised explosive device) while on his third deployment in Afghanistan. He had femoral bleeding from his legs. I put links below to Tim’s website and book, so be sure to check them out.

He saw the explosive flash and felt the pressure, but experienced no pain at first, which to him was quite surreal. He was put into a medical coma for two weeks while undergoing intensive surgeries and treatments and was also given several types of antidepressants and antipsychotic drugs.

After Tim medically retired, he stepped back and started writing down everything he went through. He realized he’d become suicidal after weaning himself off medications. But adaptive sports and mentorship pulled him through.

Over the first year after his injuries, he became extremely obese. He needed a wide wheelchair. At one point everything clicked, and he realized he had to get back to himself. Tim researched, and initially realized he needed to eat clean; that is, non-GMO, no processed carbs, and more vegetables, along with cleaner meats and lots of chicken and fish. Then he discovered keto. He started losing weight, and his energy skyrocketed.

Tim got a little derailed during the holidays, but quickly got back onto the ketogenic diet. He successfully competed in adaptive sports and has learned he needs to fine-tune his diet because of his intense athletic activities. I explain to Tim what was happening to his energy, and that vitamin B1 and magnesium are like the sparks that plug for energy. There are many elite athletes who are on strict keto and are burning fat, and whose performance is excellent. But you have to be very strict on keto to maintain the fat burning. Tim also does fasting, which benefits him too.

Tim has such a positive and light attitude, and he’s an inspiration to others. He learned that the more he was pushed out of his comfort zone, the more he grew. I’m so honored to have connected with him, let you know about his story, and that we discovered each other because of our mutual interest in the ketogenic diet.
