In this video, I’m going to show you some breathing exercises for sleep. Doing the correct breathing can really relax the body and help prepare you for sleep. When you are stressed, your breathing changes to a forceful inhalation and a shortened exhalation. This has to do with the autonomic nervous system, which controls automatic functions like breathing.

When your breathing is altered in a chronic stress state, your oxygen levels decrease throughout the body, and C02 begins to build up. This also throws off your body’s pH levels.

To help fix this problem, you can use this simple breathing exercise for sleep and for stress relief. Here’s how it works:
• Inhale for 5 seconds
• Pause for 1 second
• Exhale for 5 seconds
• Pause for 1 second
• Repeat

Do this exercise by breathing through your nose, not through your mouth. You also want to breathe from your stomach, not from your upper chest. I like to place a hand on my stomach to make sure I’m breathing correctly.

You can use this breathing technique in the car on your way to work or after any highly stressful event. You’ll notice after just a few minutes, your body is much more relaxed and you’ll be able to sleep easier. Give it a try.
