In this video, I explain another hidden cause of diabetes that’s important for you to know about. This causes excessive amounts of iron.

Isn’t this surprising? You’d think iron would be very beneficial for your body.

The problem with iron is that it’s difficult for your body to eliminate it. Many people have too much. There’s even a genetic condition called hemochromatosis, which is an iron overload disease. The person’s body simply can’t get rid of iron.

Iron is very oxidizing, resulting in a state that’s like rusting out your cells. And any time you have this effect, you have a lot of inflammation, which results in a big spike of insulin resistance.

Hemochromatosis has a link to diabetes as one of its side effects. Not to mention fatty liver and cirrhosis. Apparently iron accumulates in the beta cells in the pancreas that make insulin. So the more iron you have, the more destruction there is to the beta cells and more issues with insulin.

Where does all this iron come from? Primarily fortified foods in the US, UK, and Canada. In 1980, baby formula manufacturers began fortifying formula with iron and vitamins.

And if you look at a graph, you see that people started getting fatter when this fortification happened. I don’t think it’s the one source of the weight problem but it’s definitely a contributing factor.

In 1983 the FDA increased the iron amount in flour, coinciding with another spike in obesity.

Here’s what you can to do avoid a toxic iron build up:

Don’t consume fortified foods
Eat less red meat if you have a problem with too much iron (and see the link below)
Take something called IP6 or EDTA, to help pull out or chelate iron; take on an empty stomach before a meal, then several hours later take a supplement with the minerals you want to retain
Donate blood
Avoid supplements with iron, unless it’s in a form that’s easy to digest such as grass-fed liver
