What you aren’t told can happen when your gallbladder is removed! You can experience very unpleasant side effects. You’ll eventually have what’s called a bile deficiency. Bile is like a detergent for fat. It helps break down food, especially fats. If you don’t have enough bile, your digestion of fats and essential fatty acids is incomplete, especially omega-3 fatty acids which are important for your nerves, brain, eyes, and heart. As well, you can’t properly digest fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, and vitamin K.
Without a gallbladder to concentrate bile, it simply trickles into your intestine. Here's what can happen as a result: you’re at risk for fatty liver disease, diarrhea, constipation, anal leakage, and bloating.
Your liver normally makes 350mg of bile daily. Without your gallbladder, you’re missing the organ where the bile is concentrated before being released into your intestine.
Certain fats require bile for complete digestion, and others don’t. MCT oil, butter, and palm oil don’t need bile because they bypass the gallbladder and go straight to the intestine, making them easier to digest. Avocado oil, olive oil, nuts, and nut oils, and saturated fats all need bile to be fully digested. If you consume only these, you may have problems with digestion.
Be sure you consume omega-3 fatty acids. They have something called DHA and EPA that are important for your health. Cod liver oil is an excellent source. You may also want to take a bile salt supplement.
Now you can see why you may need to take some extra action to help your body out after your gallbladder is removed.
