I explain why gallstones don’t necessarily come from high cholesterol.

Someone asked me if gallstones come from high cholesterol, because they have both. While it’s true that gallstones are made from cholesterol, it’s also true that you must have a bile, or bile salts, deficiency for gallstones to form.
This is because bile helps keep the cholesterol broken up into small particles. Then the question becomes, what causes a decrease in bile? The causes include:
● High estrogen, especially in women who are on birth control or pregnant. Or if you’re consuming a lot of dairy.
● High cortisol, mainly caused by medications
● High insulin; prediabetics or diabetics. A high carbohydrate diet depletes bile.
● Liver or gallbladder damage including fatty liver, cirrhosis, and inflammation
● Low folate (folic acid)
● Low magnesium
● Antacids
● Low-fat diets
Bile is made in your liver, and then drains through a tube into your gallbladder where it’s concentrated then expelled when you eat. It helps break down fats and extract fat-soluble vitamins. The pancreas sends an enzyme called lipase to further break it down.
When you do keto, you might not have enough bile at first to digest the fats. However, eating saturated fats actually triggers the release of bile. If you’re on a low-fat diet, you tend not to produce much bile. This allows your cholesterol to concentrate and form gallstones.
In other words, a high-fat diet actually reduces your risk of gallstones. I put a link below to some interesting information so be sure to check it out. It talks about taking purified bile salts, and about how a high-fat diet lowers the risk of gallstones.

Gallstones don’t necessarily come from high cholesterol; you also have to be deficient in bile.
