In this short video, we're going to talk about turkey, tryptophan side effects, and what causes sleepiness after eating.

What is tryptophan?
Tryptophan is an amino acid. It's a type of protein that turns into serotonin and melatonin. Those are both hormones that help you sleep and reduce stress.

It is not true that it's the tryptophan that makes you tired during Thanksgiving. It's not due to the tryptophan side effects. The reason you feel sleepy after eating, like after Thanksgiving dinner, is because of the combination of protein and sugar.

When you add protein with starch, it will spike insulin by 200%. Not to mention the excess protein factor, which will also increase your insulin by 200%. This is what really causes sleepiness after eating a Thanksgiving dinner.
