I explain the four main causes of abdominal bloating and gas, and give you remedies.

1. SIBO, or small intestine bacterial overgrowth. This is a situation when you have too much bacteria in the wrong location. Most of the bacteria in your gut should be in the large intestine, not the small. The bacteria aren’t meant to be in the environment of your small intestine. When you eat, you get both hydrogen and methane gas, resulting in belching and bloating. Get a hydrogen/methane breath test. Check the links below for companies that will sell you the kit. The test is inexpensive but you may need a prescription. The test will confirm whether or not you have SIBO.
2. An imbalance of microbes, with too many methanogens that produce methane gas creating belching and flatulence. It’s like a mild version of SIBO. These methanogens consume polysaccharides, which are starches and sugars, leading to excessive fermentation.
3. Low stomach acid. This can set you up for SIBO and too many methanogens. If you consume too much protein, you can still get bloating and gas without enough acid to digest the protein.
4. Decreased bile, which is made by the liver and stored in the gallbladder. Without enough bile, you’ll get belching, bloating, and gas because you can’t digest the fats you eat such as nuts and oils.

Here are the remedies I recommend:

The most important thing is to cut down on carbs, because they cause stress and inflammation in your gut.
Cut down fiber, including vegetable fiber. You may even want to eliminate it for about a month to let your system reset. If you have SIBO, and eliminate fiber, you’ll starve the microbes in your small intestine. Some people don’t need to eliminate all fiber; instead, eat small amounts of cooked vegetables.

Do intermittent fasting to give your digestive system a rest.

Take betaine hydrochloride, a natural compound to help increase your hydrochloric acid. You may need to take 4 to 6 tablets before each meal, and it could take months to re-establish your stomach acid, especially if you have a history of taking antacids, antibiotics, or low salt diets.

Avoid dairy since many people are intolerant of lactose or allergic to casein.

Add bile salts if you don’t have enough bile. You know you don’t have enough bile if you have pain in the right shoulder or under your right rib cage.
