In this video, we’re going to talk about how salt can help improve digestion. Salt is incredibly important for digestion because it provides the body with sodium chloride. Chloride is a key component of hydrochloric acid. Adequate hydrochloric acid in the stomach is vital for protein digestion.
The average American consumes 6 times the salt they actually need. When you switch to keto and remove processed foods and junk food from your diet, your salt intake decreases significantly. Significant water weight is also lost during keto, which means you lose electrolytes as well.
If you’re not consuming enough salt, you could end up with low amounts of chlorides resulting in low hydrochloric acid in the stomach. This will cause problems with protein digestion.
Symptoms of poor protein digestion include gas, bloating, and constipation. If you’re having a problem with protein digestion, try adding more sea salt to your diet.
