In this video, I’m going to describe the ten unhealthy side effects of TUMS and tell you what to take in its place.
TUMS is made of calcium carbonate. In college, I was the guy popping TUMS like candy. I got a lot of side effects, although at the time, I didn’t realize what they were caused by. I had severe heartburn and acid reflux.
Normally, the stomach pH should be between one and three. That’s highly acidic, like battery acid. When your pH goes up and your stomach becomes too alkaline, the valve on top of your stomach doesn’t close properly, and the acid splashes up into your esophagus. In other words, heartburn and acid reflux are caused by not enough acid.
Because you feel pain, you take an alkalizer like calcium carbonate, and you feel better. Until the next time, you eat!
The purpose of strong stomach acid is to help you digest protein, absorb minerals, and kill pathogens. When you don’t have strong enough stomach acid, your body can’t properly perform these actions, leading to ten unhealthy side effects:
1. Constipation
2. Gas
3. Burping
4. Increased risk of stomach bugs
5. Heart arrhythmias—because you’re not absorbing electrolytes and other minerals
6. Kidney stones
7. Abdominal pain
8. Increased urination, especially at night
9. Dehydration
10. Depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders—because your body can’t break down the proteins to convert to amino acids, which help produce neurotransmitters like serotonin, GABBA, and dopamine.
Instead of TUMS or their calcium carbonate equivalent, consume apple cider vinegar instead. Put some in water, drink it down, and see how you feel. You’ll avoid these ten unhealthy side effects of TUMS.
