How does the digestive system work? In this video, I’m going to answer this question and other related ones.

To start off, let’s talk about the stomach. The stomach makes a special acid that breaks down food and kills bacteria. When the stomach is not acidic enough, you run into many issues, including:
• Poor digestion of protein
• Nutrient deficiencies
• Bacteria overgrowth
• Indigestion
• Heartburn
• Gas

For those who take antacids, which reduce acidity, keep in mind that this can make heartburn worse. Your lower esophageal sphincter (LES) prevents food and acid from coming up into the esophagus. However, if your stomach’s acidity isn’t between 1 and 3 (this is very acidic), then the LES won’t close all the way, allowing acid to splash up and cause a burning sensation. You can fix this with betaine hydrochloride—unless you have an ulcer.

Let’s talk about the pancreas. The pancreas creates enzymes—these are used to break down food. What kind of food you consume will affect the type of enzymes the pancreas creates in order to break the food down. If your pancreas isn’t working correctly, you may experience:
• Pain in upper-left abdomen or back
• Sticky stool
• Bloating

The liver’s function is to create bile. Bile helps break down fat and fat-soluble vitamins. When bile is created, it’s sent to the gall bladder for storage. The gall bladder then releases bile as it’s needed. If your liver or gallbladder are not working right, you can experience:
• Bloating
• Burping
• Right shoulder pain
• Floating stool (because of undigested fat)
• Vision problems at night
• Dry skin

Then, we have the small intestine. Your intestines are around 33 feet. Within your intestines, you have around 900 Trillion microbes. These microbes help break down food, make vitamins, get rid of waste, and fight off bad microbes. If your intestines don’t have the right bacteria, you can experience:
• Constipation
• Yeast infection
• Fungal infection
• Bad breath
