Your metabolism is in all of your cells. It's a chemical process that goes from stored energy or calories in the form of fat or stored sugar to fuel energy. Or, calories from food to energy.
Your basal metabolic rate is the rate at which your body uses energy at rest. The majority of your calories are burned when you're in this resting state—not while you're exercising. When you're exercising or doing physical activity, you're burning calories, but a much lower amount.
Things that affect metabolism:
• Age (your metabolism slows down with age)
• Sex (males have a faster metabolism than females)
• Genetics
• Diet
• Stress
• Sleep
• History of dieting and health issues
• Muscle mass
The above factors don't even compare to your insulin status when it comes to increasing your metabolism. Your insulin status is how much insulin is being pumped through your body on a daily basis. Insulin is the main thing that causes a slow metabolism.
In the presence of insulin, it will be difficult to burn fat. Frequent eating and carbs are the two things that stimulate insulin. If you fix insulin resistance, you will speed up your slow metabolism. Out of all of the things you can do, reducing your insulin will have the most profound effect on your metabolism.
