I talked on the phone with a woman who was upset because her husband and friends were losing weight on the keto diet but she wasn’t, and she was eating healthier than they were. She thought keto wasn’t working for her. She was frustrated that so much effort was resulting in so little result.
I assessed whether she had a good metabolism like she believed she did. She ate lots of food but didn’t gain weight, she just couldn’t lose and was still 20 pounds overweight. So let’s take a look: she has a set point, a certain weight she can’t get below.
But what’s behind the set point? Severe insulin resistance, in which insulin no longer works as it should in your body. Your cells won’t let it in, and your cells will starve for lack of fuel and nutrients plus store the unused fuel as fat. Plus your body makes more and more insulin because it gets the mistaken signal that there isn’t enough.
The more insulin you have, the more your body reinforces its set point and no matter what you do, like exercise more and eat less, your weight won’t go down.
Keto might not be working, although it did at first. This woman was eating lots of keto bombs with dairy as a fat source. Plus, she was fasting but only for 12-15 hours. I advised her to fast for a minimum of 18 hours to start fixing insulin resistance.
After two weeks on keto, she got her period and had severe menstrual cycle problems for the next two weeks. This usually comes from dairy that’s not grass-fed organic.
Take these action steps:
●Be cautious who you get advice from; get it from people who’ve had the best results
●Hyper focus on fixing your insulin resistance by intermittent fasting, further lowering carbs, taking apple cider vinegar, and increasing dietary fat at your meal
●Handle any other health problems such as with your menstrual cycle, sleep, thyroid, inflammation, or digestion. I have videos on each of these topics so check them out.
●Consume non-dairy keto bombs; use coconut oil or nuts instead
You can also ask your doctor for the HOMA-IR test to assess your insulin resistance. But how you truly know if you’re on the right track is if your hunger goes away.
Try taking these steps to see if you can get your body past its set point and lose those last 20 pounds when you’re on the keto diet.
