In this video, I discuss which is worse for you: white sugar or white flour? I mean cane sugar, not beet sugar, and regular white wheat flour. (Beet sugar and high fructose corn syrup are GMO while cane sugar isn’t.)

On the glycemic index, sugar is 63 while flour is 71, making white flour worse than white sugar. However, both of them can create similar effects with the spike in insulin they each cause: weight gain; especially belly fat, fatty liver, prediabetes, insulin resistance. And eventually, diabetes, high cholesterol, and the list goes on.

Bleach isn’t used in the production of white sugar, but it is with white flour. With white sugar, the vitamins and minerals are removed and made into molasses. What’s left is white sugar; pure carbohydrate without the nutrients.

When you consume white sugar, it will deplete you of nutrients because, in order to metabolize the sugar, you use up vitamins and minerals in your body’s reserves. So you end up with a deficiency of potassium, magnesium, B1, and calcium.

With white flour, the vitamins and minerals are removed during the refining process, also leaving pure carbohydrates without nutrients. Most flour is fortified, so some synthetic vitamins and iron are added back in. But it’s not the kind of iron you want! Those so-called nutrients can create a problem, especially if you already have an issue with iron.

We tend to accumulate iron, and the body has a hard time getting rid of it. Flour also contains dough conditioner and the bleaching agent benzoyl peroxide, which combines with proteins such as gluten in the flour to form a substance called alloxan, which in studies on rats kills cells in the pancreas that make insulin, and the rats become diabetic type 1.

The big negative with white flour is potassium bromate. It’s banned in Europe, China, Brazil, and Canada, but not in the US. It’s been known to cause cancer in animals, and it’s added to the dough to make the texture perfect. And let’s not forget gluten, which so many people have a problem with. It can trigger an autoimmune disease and create a lot of inflammation.

Now you can see that white flour is actually worse than white sugar.
