I explain the protein weight of a food as compared to its total weight, so you can calculate how much protein on keto you need.

In this video, I clarify how many grams of protein on keto you should eat, along with the total protein weight in common foods versus the total weight of those foods. For example, if you weighed six ounces of ground beef, that’s 168 grams. Some people think that’s the protein weight, and say 168 grams is too high. Yet its protein weight is thirty grams.

Just because something is a protein food doesn’t mean it’s one hundred percent protein unless you’re talking about some kind of protein powder.

But when you’re talking about common protein sources like ground beef, turkey, or ground pork, not all of these items are protein. Let me break it down for you:

●Ground beef, 6 ounces or a food weight of 168 grams, protein weight 30 grams
●Turkey, 6 ounces or a food weight of 168 grams, protein weight 48 grams
●Egg, one, 50 grams of food weight, 7 grams of protein weight
●Ground pork, 4 ounces or a food weight of 112 grams, 23 grams of protein weight
●Fish, 4 ounces or a food weight of 113 grams, protein weight 20 grams

Fat and water make up the rest of the weight.

I always recommend consuming three to six ounces of protein per meal, and I don’t really talk about how many grams of protein weight. I mean the food weight.

Turkey has less fat than 80 percent lean ground beef, which is why its protein content is higher even with the same number of total food ounces.

Though I recommend three to six ounces per meal for the average person, your protein needs could go up depending on your metabolism, how big you are, and how much you exercise. Also, if you’re having fewer meals, maybe increase your protein a little.

For myself, I weigh about 180 pounds and I pretty well stick to about 58 grams of protein on keto per day.
