In this video, I explain how to get teenagers to eat healthy. With teens, you’re dealing with someone who has very low awareness of the connection between what they’re eating and future consequences.

I most often see people when they’re older and have health problems, so they’re motivated to take action. When I talk with them, it becomes obvious there was a pattern that began in their youth and then gradually worsened as they aged. They’re high on the motivation scale: they’re dying or in chronic pain.

If you have teens, you’d like for them to become aware sooner of the connection between their diet and future problems, rather than later. It has to make sense to them. The solution has to be real. And a big mistake parents make is they push the solution before they help raise their teenager’s awareness that they could be creating health problems for themselves in the future.

What I did with my kids was sit them down, when they’re fully fed, and go through some common scenarios of the health problems that can occur with a poor diet over time. For example, I explain how belly fat means someone’s liver is so full of fat that it can’t hold any more, so the fat spills over and around the organs, resulting in visceral fat.

The fat can even fill up other organs, leading to clogged arteries and affecting your heart. As well, a fatty liver leads to inflammation and cirrhosis, which is scar tissue on your liver. Your liver gets so damaged that you get permanent high blood pressure. A damaged liver can also lead to type 2 diabetes, which over 65 percent of the US population has. I give them other examples as well, such as how heart attacks and strokes often happen without warning after years of unhealthy eating. So too does Alzheimer’s develop over years of poor diet.

After I tell this to teens, I want them to reach out for help. And that’s what my kids did. Only then did I bring up the solution of healthy keto and intermittent fasting. The goal is to get them to change sooner rather than later, before they do too much damage to their health.

Now you see how to get teenagers to eat healthy.
