In this video, I interview Dr. Andreas Eenfeldt about keto. He’s the CEO and creator of the influential website Diet Doctor. Although he and I are both committed to spreading the word about the benefits of keto, he explains some of the barriers he’s run into. One is that the paradigm shift of people willing to go on keto has been much slower than he expected. Many people still fear eating healthy fat, even though modern science shows no strong correlation between eating fat and heart attacks or strokes.
The second barrier is the idea that weight loss is all about calories in/calories out, when research shows it’s more effective to simply avoid carbs. Some new research even shows people burn more calories per day on a low-carb diet, along with eating fewer calories. But calories isn’t the key part of weight loss; it’s hormones along with the quality of the calories you eat.
I’ve noticed that top food manufacturing companies are shifting in favor of lowering sugar and carbs in their products, which to me is encouraging.
Dr. Eenfeldt began treating his patients with keto for type 2 diabetes and obesity in the early 2000’s. It transformed his idea of practicing medicine. He’d been taught to expect his patients would come back each year sicker and more in decline. This was considered normal. But when he began treating people with a low-carb, high-fat diet, they started coming back healthier!
Although we know that one of the foundations of good health is proper nutrition, most medical professionals receive almost no training in nutrition.
Dr. Eenfeldt’s opinion is that there is a wide range of amounts of protein that can benefit most people, depending on their particular health situation. It takes a few days to figure out the amount of protein that works for you. Same for the amount of vegetables you eat. Find out what works for your body.
There are numerous reasons why people do well when they’re in ketosis. It’s an effective way to lose weight without going hungry, to reverse type 2 diabetes, to help with epilepsy, and sometimes simply to feel better. But there’s not yet any high-quality studies to definitively say why this happens.
All in all, a fascinating interview with a world-renowned keto expert.
