I interviewed keto carnivore coach Tristan Haggard about the benefits of organ meats. Tristan consumes a carnivorous diet, and finds that he sometimes craves marrow, heart, and liver. He finds he does better on a low-fiber diet. Although we need some fiber for our good gut bacteria to eat, there are some people who don’t do well on large amounts of it.
There are different types of gut bacteria that exist to break down different micronutrients. Your gut microbiome doesn’t stay healthy solely on fiber. A strict vegan diet isn’t healthy for many people. We need food from animal sources for overall health.
The liver, for example, has more vitamin C, in the form best used by your body, than almost any other food. It has many other valuable nutrients as well. And we need animal fats, preferably from fatty cuts of meat from grass-fed animals. Eating too much lean meat without fat leads to illness.
Organ meats are easy to prepare. A few times a week, add them to your diet; for example, liver sauteed in butter. And a well-rounded diet, which eliminates sugar, can help remedy or prevent injuries.
Many doctors today aren’t knowledgeable about the role nutrition plays in health. Rather than immediately prescribe a medication, they don’t know they can tell the parent to stop feeding cereal and instead fix their child eggs for breakfast, and liver once a week!
Organ meats are so often shunned in our society nowadays, but they’re incredibly healthful.
