In this video, we're going to talk about the importance of vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) on a keto and intermittent fasting plan. Vitamin B5 is a cofactor for energy metabolism, specifically for enzymes that help you break down fat.

When you’re converting from sugar-burning to ketosis through a process known as keto adaptation, vitamin B5 is incredibly important.

Vitamin B5 is a key nutrient that helps your body produce melatonin for sleep and is also important for the production of acetylcholine. Acetylcholine helps you feel awake during the day and supports REM sleep at night. It also plays an important role in nerve and muscle function.

Acetylcholine is a very important for adrenal function because it’s necessary for the production of cortisol.

Symptoms of a vitamin B5 deficiency include keto fatigue, nerve pain, inflammation, stress, and insomnia. These symptoms can be common during a transition to the keto diet as the body begins to require more vitamin B5.

It’s rare to be deficient in vitamin B5 due to low intake because it’s found abundantly in many foods. Typically, a deficiency is caused by a digestive issue. Your gut flora plays a critical role in the production of vitamin B5. If you do not have enough friendly bacteria in your gut, it can cause deficiencies in vitamin B5 as well as other B vitamins.

Your gut flora also needs vitamin D to survive. Make sure to get plenty of sunlight and take a vitamin D3 supplement in the wintertime.
