Logan Sneed was diagnosed with glioblastoma, the most aggressive form of brain cancer. He received information that the ketogenic diet could help prevent tumor growth and potentially shrink it too. After going on keto, Logan asked me, “You know I’m on keto, but If you were me, what would you eat?”. I told him to eat all organic food. He did. Although doctors expected his vision and balance to be affected, they weren’t.
I explained that a scientist named Otto Warburg discovered the primary difference between cancer cells and healthy cells is that cancer cells get their energy from fermentation, or anaerobic respiration, rather than aerobic respiration, when oxygen combines with protein, carbs, and fat from food. This happens when there is damage to the mitochondria, which is the part of your cell that produces energy. Your cells then ferment sugar for energy, leading to the uncontrolled cell growth of cancer.
Going on keto makes sense when you need to significantly limit sugar. Dr. Thomas Seyfried’s work treating cancer with keto and intermittent fasting has shown significant benefits, particularly once he realized cancer also needs a protein called glutamine. When he gave a drug that blocks glutamine and paired it with keto, the results were impressive. The tumors need to be starved of both glucose (sugar) and glutamine. They can’t survive on the ketones that are produced by the ketogenic diet. Cancer starts with breakdown of the mitochondria. And it’s often triggered by things such as chemicals, radiation, and high levels of glucose. This is why it’s crucial to eat organic foods.
Going on keto for cancer can be very beneficial.
