Please join me in welcoming Professor Timothy Noakes, South African scientist, professor, and author.
Professor Noakes studied physiology in the 60s and 70s, and was taught that a high carbohydrate diet is essential for athletic performance. After losing his father to type 2 diabetes, and being diagnosed himself, Professor Noakes decided to change his diet and expand his research.
Professor Noakes found that many of the recommendations for optimal athletic performance were not accurate. As a runner, he realized that athletes were consuming far too much water.
Drinking too much water has dangerous consequences like brain swelling and even death. Professor Noakes became the leading researcher in exercise associated hyponatremia, which occurs after someone has drank too much water.
In this interview, Professor Noakes also explains how athletes do not need to consume large amounts of carbohydrates for optimal performance. When running or exercising, most of the energy that you’re burning comes from fat, not carbohydrates.
Professor Noakes explains that everytime you eat carbohydrates, you over secrete insulin. Fat has the least effect on insulin, so a high-fat low-carb diet can be very beneficial.
Professor Noakes is retired, but his foundation, The Noakes Foundation, is currently working on diabetes research.
