1:30 Added sugar vs. total sugar
Every five years, the United States comes out with dietary guidelines for Americans. The scientific advisory committee that gives recommendations for the guidelines wanted to make two big changes from the previous guidelines.
1. They recommend we make more drastic cuts to the added sugar we consume. They recommend a person cut their added sugars from the previous 10% to 6% of their total calories.
*Unfortunately, this was rejected and not added to the new guidelines.
2. They also recommended to change the current recommendation concerning alcohol from two drinks a day for a male and one drink a day for a female to one drink a day for both males and females. This is based on the link between alcohol and obesity, heart disease, and liver disease. The previous idea that alcohol moderation may be healthy is no longer valid.
When it comes to sugar consumption, in the guidelines, they’re talking about added sugar and not total sugar. The recommendation in the guidelines for total carbohydrates is between 45% and 60% of your total calories. All carbs turn to sugar except fiber. Many people aren’t aware of how much sugar they’re consuming every day.
Really, the percent of added sugar a person should have in their diet is 0%, and the percent of carbohydrates a person should have in their diet is only 5%. I believe the best thing to do is to switch to a healthy keto diet and cut out the added sugar and carbs to help promote a healthy body.
