It’s becoming more common for kids to develop fatty liver disease. There’s no medical cure for this condition because it’s related to a person’s lifestyle.

Most of the time, when a child has a fatty liver, there are no symptoms, or the symptoms are hard to detect. Early symptoms could include fatigue, confusion, or weakness. A lot of the symptoms occur later in life.

A few risk factors for a fatty liver are obesity, insulin resistance, and prediabetes. But, I believe high levels of carbohydrates in the diet cause these risk factors. High carb diets could potentially cause obesity, insulin resistance, prediabetes, and a fatty liver.

Once a person starts developing more and more fat in the liver, they start destroying liver cells. The fat in the liver starts to release cytokines, which creates inflammation. This inflammation can lead to scar tissue or fibrosis, which then can lead to cirrhosis.

When asking ourselves why a child would ever develop a fatty liver, we have to look at their diet. Some children are consuming foods and drinks that can potentially lead to a fatty liver.

The average American child is consuming:
• Breakfast cereal
• Processed meat
• High amounts of processed chicken
• Soft drinks
• Juice

What you could do:
• Introduce alternative pleasure foods (make treats and other things with keto-friendly ingredients)
• Get the child on a low-carb diet
• Introduce alternatives to soda and juice (try sugar-free drinks like soda sweetened with stevia)
