In this video, we’re going to talk about why American cheese isn’t real cheese.
On the back of American cheese products, you’ll find a label that says “pasteurized cheese product.”
Why?
To be considered cheese, a cheese product has to contain at least 51% cheese—American cheese doesn’t.
What is in American cheese, then?
Take a look…
American cheese is made out of:
• Unfermented dairy from commercial cows
• Emulsifiers
• Sodium phosphate (potential cause of kidney damage)
• Tartrate (may cause diarrhea)
• Salt
• Artificial color
• Whey
• Modified food starch
• Natamycin (mold inhibitor)
• Soy or canola oil
• Vitamins
• Trisodium phosphate (used as a cleaner and stain remover)
