Let's talk about the safety of energy drinks. Energy drinks have been linked to cardiac death in teenagers. Teenagers have a much lower tolerance for caffeine. Many times, additional caffeine and other caffeine-like stimulants in herbs are not calculated in energy drinks.

In a small, 8 oz. energy drink, there could be up to 320mg of caffeine, not counting the other stimulants and caffeine in the herbs. That is 6-7 times the FDA-imposed limit of 47mg of caffeine per 8 oz. of soda.

Potential side effects of energy drinks:
• Increased heart rate
• Palpitations
• Arrhythmias
• Dehydration
• Insomnia
• High blood pressure
• Loss of electrolytes

The added sugar in energy drinks can also deplete important nutrients necessary for keeping the pulse rate under control.

Other additions in many energy drinks:
• Taurine (can increase pulse rate and palpitations)
• Ginseng (can increase blood pressure)
• Ephedra (can stimulate the nervous system)
• Kola nut (contains a massive amount of caffeine)

Sometimes, teenagers also combine energy drinks with alcohol or exercise, which can be especially bad for the heart. On top of that, stimulating a tired body with an energy drink will just cause you to be more tired.

How to boost energy naturally:
1. Get off a high carb diet
2. Get plenty of sleep
3. Take B-vitamins (nutritional yeast is a great source)
