If rubbing alcohol can kill viruses and bacteria, then why can’t we drink rubbing alcohol to kill viruses in the body?
Rubbing alcohol is at least 60% alcohol. You need greater than 60% alcohol to kill or inactivate viruses, bacteria, and other microorganisms. This is why people use hand sanitizer.
Most alcohol drinks, like vodka, gin, whisky, or rum, are around 40% alcohol. But, certain types can be much greater than 40%.
When you drink alcohol, it quickly gets diluted. It especially gets diluted in the bloodstream. The concentration of alcohol in your bloodstream after having one of these drinks would probably be about 1/1000th of what it would be in rubbing alcohol.
So, the answer is no. Drinking alcohol is not going to kill viruses or bacteria.
In fact, drinking alcohol can have negative effects, such as:
• Lowering your immune system
• Increasing your susceptibility to viral and bacterial infections
• Increasing gut inflammation
• Changes in microbes
• Increasing gut permeability
• Increasing the overgrowth of bad bacteria
