Today we’re going to talk about alcohol and the endocrine system. The endocrine system is a communication system that uses hormones to communicate. It has broad effects on the body.

How alcohol affects the endocrine system:

1. Alcohol affects the HPA (hypothalamus adrenal axis). When you consume alcohol, you get overactive ACTH and cortisol. This can cause stress, increased glucose, decreased memory, and increased insulin resistance.

2. Alcohol affects the HPG. This has to do with the hypothalamus, pituitary, and gonads. It can create underactive gonads. This can lead to decreased libido, decreased fertility, and gonad atrophy.

3. Alcohol affects GH (growth hormone). Growth hormone has many effects on the body. Growth hormone triggers IGF-1. Both of these are fat-burning hormones. IGF-1 can be shut down by 75-80%.

4. Alcohol affects insulin. Insulin can go up, creating insulin resistance and potentially leading to diabetes.

5. Alcohol affects the thyroid. Alcohol messes with the liver and stops the conversion of T4 to T3, which can lead to a hyperthyroid condition.

A good alternative to alcohol is kombucha tea. It’s very carbonated and can help you feel relaxed.
