I’ve heard people say that all vitamin D is the same and that it doesn’t matter which form of vitamin D you take. This is not true. It’s a complete myth. 

There are two forms of vitamin D:
1. Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) 
This version of vitamin D:
• Is mostly synthetic 
• Is more fragile 
• Is less stable 
• Is naturally found in mushrooms (most of what you see is not from mushrooms) 
• Doesn’t stay in the body very long 
• Studies did not show a decreased mortality benefit

2. Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) 
This version of vitamin D:
• Is more stable 
• Lasts longer in the body 
• Is natural 
• Comes from animal products (sheep wool, liver, fatty fish, cod liver oil, butter, egg yolk) 
• Is less toxic than vitamin D2
