Could certain vitamins shorten your life? Fifty-six trials with a low risk of bias found that certain antioxidant supplements significantly increase mortality.
This conflicts with what we know about antioxidants, so it’s time to dig further to understand this. It turns out a lot of the antioxidants that were studied in these trials were synthetic. They were not natural. They used synthetic vitamins because they believe there is no difference between synthetic vitamins and natural vitamins.
But I disagree. I don’t believe the molecule of a synthetic vitamin is the same as the molecule of a natural vitamin. Plus, in nature, you never see this isolated compound, which is what they used.
An antioxidant basically donates an electron to a free radical to balance it out and make it more stable. But, when it donates the electron, it becomes unstable, and the antioxidant turns into a free radical. This is why, in our bodies and in nature, you always see networks of antioxidants. This way, they can borrow electrons and become stabilized.
So, while antioxidants could be dangerous in an isolated setting, you don’t have to be afraid of antioxidants because you have antioxidants in your body to help you.
What you could do:
• Don’t take synthetic antioxidant supplements (especially beta-carotene, vitamin E, and vitamin A)
• Make sure your vitamins are food-based or in a complex from food (not a specific isolated antioxidant)
