Today, let’s talk about the foods highest in zinc. Zinc is a co-factor in around 300 enzymes. If you don’t have zinc, these enzymes can’t work. Zinc is a multi-system nutrient. When you’re deficient in zinc, multiple organs can be affected.

These enzymes help support different parts of the body, including:
• The immune system
• The reproductive system
• The skin
• The vision
• The thyroid
• The pancreas

Excess zinc is not stored in the body. If you’re not consuming zinc on a regular basis, you can become deficient fairly quickly.

A few things that can cause a zinc deficiency:
• Inflammation
• Gut issues
• An infection
• A high-carb diet
• Refined foods

Trying to depend on seeds, grains, or legumes for zinc can be a problem. These foods have phytates, which block certain minerals like zinc, magnesium, and calcium.

Foods with the highest amount of zinc (listed highest to lowest):
• Oysters
• Beef liver
• Beef kidney
• Crab
• Grass-fed beef
• Grass-fed lamb
• Lobster
• Sesame seeds (less bioavailable)
• Pumpkin seeds (less bioavailable)
• Cashews
• Shrimp

There is an interesting zinc test from Standard Process that you can do. You would put two teaspoons of the zinc fluid in your mouth and hold it there for ten seconds. During the ten seconds, if you have a lack of taste, you may be zinc deficient. If you have a strong metallic taste in your mouth, you may have enough zinc.
