In this video, we’re going to talk about having coffee and caffeine during pregnancy.

Can you have coffee while you’re pregnant?

It is best to have no more than one 8oz cup of coffee per day during pregnancy. Here’s why...

Caffeine has the potential to cause:
• Birth defects
• Premature labor
• Decreased fertility
• Increased risk of miscarriage
• Impaired liver function
• High levels of cortisol

Having just 2-3 cups of coffee has the potential to alter your growth hormone levels, putting you at a higher risk of liver disease.

Coffee isn’t the only beverage with a lot of caffeine. Other sources of caffeine include:
• Chocolate
• Tea
• Energy drinks
• Pain killers
• Soda

As a side note, anytime you consume carbohydrates and sugar, your ability to absorb vitamin C diminishes. So if you’re pregnant and you’re consuming too many carbs, this can cause a vitamin C deficiency—which can potentially lead to developmental issues in the womb.

Nutrient deficiencies to look out for:
• Low vitamin C - sugar/carbs
• Low zinc - grains (phytic acid)
• Low vitamin B1 - carbs
• Low vitamin E - refined flour
• Low potassium - refined sugar
• Low vitamin D - low sun exposure
• Low folate and vitamin C - low vegetable consumption
