Facet joints are little joints situated through out the spinal column. They can be a common source of back pain. A facet joint injection can be helpful in diagnosing and alleviating back pain associated with facet joints.
The procedure is done under local anaesthetic. The doctor will initially numb the skin and deeper tissues with a numbing medicine. He will then use a special x-ray machine called a fluoroscope to guide the needle accurately in to the facet joint. A mixture of local anaesthetic and steroid is injected slowly in to the joint.
The local anaesthetic can provide immediate pain relief but the steroid can take a few days to work. Pain relief from facet joint injections can last several months though this may not always be the case.
