Exfoliating your face is an essential step in any skincare routine. It helps to remove dead skin cells, unclog pores, and promote cell turnover for a brighter and smoother complexion. But how often should you exfoliate your face? Let's take a closer look.
First, it's important to understand that not all exfoliants are created equal. There are physical exfoliants, such as scrubs and brushes, that physically remove dead skin cells. There are also chemical exfoliants, like alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs), that work to dissolve dead skin cells and unclog pores.
If you're using a physical exfoliant, such as a scrub, it's generally recommended that you exfoliate no more than two to three times per week. Over-exfoliating can lead to irritation and damage to the skin barrier, which can cause dryness, redness, and even breakouts.
Chemical exfoliants, on the other hand, can be used more frequently. AHAs, such as glycolic acid, are water-soluble and work best on the surface of the skin. They're great for addressing hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and dullness. BHAs, such as salicylic acid, are oil-soluble and can penetrate deeper into the pores to unclog them. They're ideal for those with acne-prone or oily skin.
