You must have heard of these computer glasses aka blue light blocker glasses. These glasses are talk of the town nowadays.

But first let us see what is this blue light that everyone wants to fight off?

Our eyes are naturally trained for absorbing different colours and wavelengths of lights. Among them there is also blue light which is considered harmful for our eye health. Its excessive exposure harms your eyes and leads to eye problems like cataract, dry eye, eye strain and so on.

Now the major source of blue light is the sun. Our digital screens also emit blue light. So when we are looking at our screen we are sort of staring at the sun.

How is blue light emitted by our screens harmful?

Blue light stimulates our brain to get active given that sun is its source. Therefore, when you see this blue light at any time, your body’s reaction is to get active. So, when you get its exposure at night time, it disturbs your circadian rhythm by diminishing the melatonin aka sleep inducing hormone and results in side effects like insomnia or disturbed sleep that ultimately gives rise to various health diseases like cardiac disorders, hypertension, anxiety, early dementia headaches etc. and the circle goes on.

What are blue light filter glasses?

Blue light filter glasses have specially customised lens that are believed to block the blue light exposing your eyes.

Are these glasses worth the hype?

According to American academy of ophthalmologist guidelines, these glasses have not such mighty role as shown in the advertisements of various optical companies. Nowadays, there are inbuilt blue light filters in almost every device that prevent your eyes from getting excess exposure of those harmful radiations. So, it is NOT A MUST thing to wear while using your screens.

But if you use these glasses, there is no harm in taking the precaution over curing. It will save you the eye strain, headache and numerous other troubles that are caused by blue light exposure. So, you might as well use it if your eyes are under constant exposure of blue light. But if you are not comfortable with glasses, it’s ok to not use them. It solely depends on how you feel works the best for you.

This topic is still under research as to how much potential do these blue light filter glasses have in preventing eye health issues. But a major chunk of studies has shown that deteriorating eye health is not just because of the blue light emitted by our screens but there are many other factors that play a huge role in this matter like less blinking when staring at the screen, focusing at one point for long time, etc.

So, the best way to protect your eyes from deteriorating and developing poor health conditions is to get as less screen exposure as possible.

You can adopt the 20-20-20 rule for this. The idea here is to look at something at 20 feet distance for 20 seconds after every 20 minutes of screen exposure.
