Low Phosphate (Hypophosphatemia) | Causes, Symptoms, Treatment | & Role of Phosphate, Dietary Sources

Lesson on low phosphate (Hypophosphatemia), purpose of phosphate, dietary sources of phosphate, causes of low phosphate, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment. Phosphate is an important element acquired from our diet that is required for formation of many cellular compounds including ATP (adenosine triphosphate). There are many dietary sources of phosphate including dairy products, grains, and meats. There are several categories of causes of low phosphate including decreased absorption, increased renal losses, among others, and can also be caused by certain medications. In this lesson, we discuss multiple causes within each of these categories and discuss many different types of medications that can lead to low phosphate levels. We also discuss some of the signs and symptoms of having low phosphate, coexisting electrolyte disturbances, and hematologic, cardiac, and neurologic complications of having too low of phosphate. We also discuss how we can treat both mild and severe Hypophosphatemia.
