Lesson on Lyme Disease: Pathophysiology, Signs & Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment. Lyme disease is caused by an infection with a spirochete bacteria of the Borrelia genus. The clinical presentation of Lyme Disease is separated into 3 stages: Stage 1 is early localized with a characteristic erythema migrans bulls eyes target lesion, Stage 2 is early disseminated with CNS and cardiac symptoms, while Stage 3 is late persistent with characteristic arthritis and neurological symptoms. Diagnosis is made utilizing serology to detect anti-borrelia antibodies. Treatment depends on the stage of the infection.
