Lesson on Methionine Metabolism and the Activated Methyl Cycle. Methionine is a sulfur-containing essential amino acid, which can be processed within the activated methyl cycle to produce s-adenosyl methionine (SAM) and tetrahydrofolate (THF). Methionine can also be metabolized to succinyl-CoA, which can then be utilized in the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle to generate ATP. Two enzymes in these pathways, one in the activated methyl cycle and the other needed to produce succinyl-CoA, require vitamin B12 for there utilization.

We will also discuss the purpose of the activated methyl cycle, the enzymes involved in each pathway, which vitamins are required for enzyme activity, and how methionine is converted into succinyl CoA for energy production.
