Lesson on Diverticulitis: Causes And Risk Factors, Pathogenesis, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment and Complications. Diverticulitis is a gastrointestinal condition that is caused by inflammation of outpouchings of the large intestine (colon), which are known as diverticula. Diverticulosis is the condition of having diverticula (without having inflammation). There are several risk factors that can increase the likelihood of developing diverticulosis and diverticulitis, which includes low fibre diets. Diverticulitis can lead to characteristic abdominal pain that can be debilitating, usually with associated changes in bowel habits. Diverticulitis can be diagnosed via history and CT imaging modalities. CT imaging also allows detection of any complications of diverticulitis, including abscess formation, which can determine if the condition is an uncomplicated or complicated diverticulitis. After determine severity, treatment can be initiated, which often involves “gut rest” and antibiotics, which we discuss in more details in this lesson.
