A gas turbine, also called a combustion turbine, is a type of continuous flow internal combustion engine. The main parts common to all gas turbine engines form the power-producing part (known as the gas generator or core) and are, in the direction of flow:
a rotating gas compressor
a combustor
a compressor-driving turbine.
What is gas turbine and how it works?
As hot combustion gas expands through the turbine, it spins the rotating blades. The rotating blades perform a dual function: they drive the compressor to draw more pressurized air into the combustion section, and they spin a generator to produce electricity.
Why are gas turbines used?
A gas turbine is a combustion engine at the heart of a power plant that can convert natural gas or other liquid fuels to mechanical energy. This energy then drives a generator that produces the electrical energy that moves along power lines to homes and businesses.
What are the 3 main components of gas turbine?
The gas turbine has three major sections, namely the compressor, combustor and turbine (although, from a materials perspective, the other major component groups – rotor, casing and auxiliaries – are also of interest). The compressor, combustor and turbine sections are highlighted i
Where is gas turbine used?
By far the most important use of gas turbines is in aviation, where they provide the motive power for jet propulsion. Because of the significance of this application and the diversity of modern jet engines, the subject will be dealt with at length in a separate section of the article.
Which gas is used in gas turbine?
Natural gas is the most preferred conventional fuel for propulsion of gas turbines. In view of this, it is often used as a reference fuel for comparison of the performance of gas turbine engines.
Why is it called a gas turbine?
gas-turbine engine, any internal-combustion engine employing a gas as the working fluid used to turn a turbine. The term also is conventionally used to describe a complete internal-combustion engine consisting of at least a compressor, a combustion chamber, and a turbine.
What are the 4 types of gas turbine engine?
There are four different types of turbine engines – turbojet, turboprop, turbofan and turboshaft.
What are the features of gas turbine?
Gas turbines have many advantages such as light weight, small size, multifuel capability, low emissions, low noise, and low vibration. However, the shortcoming is that their thermal efficiency decreases as their output power decreases. The thermal efficiency of small-size engines under 500 kW is 15 ∼ 20%.
What is the speed of gas turbine?
In North America where the power grid operates at a frequency of 60 Hz, large gas turbines typically operate with a shaft speed of 3600 RPM. In Europe the gas turbine typically operates with a shaft speed of 3000 RPM to generate electricity with a frequency of 50 Hz.
The available capacity of gas turbines ranges from 500kW to 250MW. Gas turbines are well suited for CHP applications because high-pressure steam (as high as 1200psig) can be generated from their high-temperature exhaust using heat recovery steam
