Fundamentals of Convective Heat Transfer

Concept covered:
In this lecture, we discussed about thermal boundary layer (region near to the wall where effect of temperature gradient is observed). We started with the energy equation and using order of magnitude analysis we derived the boundary layer energy equation. Then we considered two different cases and deduced the order of thermal boundary layer thickness, convective heat transfer coefficient and nusselt number. First, when thermal boundary layer thickness is larger than the hydrodynamic boundary layer thickness. And next we considered hydrodynamic boundary layer is greater than thermal boundary layer thickness. We also compared thermal boundary layer thickness and hydrodynamic boundary layer thickness for low and high prandtl number fluids.
