Cavitation is the sudden evaporation of our operating liquid inside the pump. This is extremely DANGEROUS. It may destroy the pump and eventually leak.

To avoid cavitation, we introduce the concept of Net Positive Specific Head Requirement. This concept (NPSHr) is used to avoid certain height in which the Pump WILL cavitate due to the “low head” available.

NPSHa stands for Net Positive Specific Head available.

A good thumb rule is to have 10% extra available than that of the required.

NOTE. By definition The NPSHa = Psuction – Pºvap

Pvapº depends entirely in the substance and temperature. Psuction depends on the system.
