Drawing is not about copying a photograph, it's about finding a 'voice'. If you want to be an artist you have to be able to draw, but how do you draw? That is the question. In this art tutorial aimed at beginners and students of art, I explain what drawing is and can be.
Drawing is a language, like any other language it is a means of communication. Drawing has an 'alphabet' of marks , textures, tones, shapes etc that give an image its meaning and therefore its means to communicate.
Learning to draw means learning to see with a critical eye. Drawing is not about what you think you see, or what some one else tells you to see, it is about your vision, your ideas.
Drawing is about observation. Observational drawing trains the eye to see, compare and contrast what is in front of you.
Being good at drawing is not about the ability to copy someone else's work. Good drawing is all about your ideas, your vision, because that is unique. being unique is one element to becoming an artist.
