Details of Negative Modulation in TV channels and Positive Modulation in TV channels, Television Engineering:
In television engineering, the terms "negative modulation" and "positive modulation" refer to the way that the video signal is combined with the carrier signal for transmission.
In negative modulation, the amplitude of the carrier signal is reduced (or "modulated") when the video signal is present. The carrier signal is at maximum amplitude when there is no video signal. Negative modulation is sometimes referred to as amplitude modulation (AM) or amplitude-modulated vestigial sideband (AM-VSB).
In positive modulation, the amplitude of the carrier signal is increased (or "modulated") when the video signal is present. The carrier signal is at minimum amplitude when there is no video signal. Positive modulation is sometimes referred to as frequency modulation (FM) or frequency-modulated vestigial sideband (FM-VSB).
In the United States, the television standard is based on negative modulation (AM-VSB). This means that the video signal is combined with the carrier signal in such a way that the amplitude of the carrier signal is reduced when the video signal is present. This modulation scheme is used for both analog and digital television broadcasts.
In other parts of the world, positive modulation (FM-VSB) is sometimes used for analog television broadcasts. However, most countries are moving toward digital television, which uses a different modulation scheme altogether.
