I have officially been workin remote now for one year. It’s been a huge change for my family, schedule, lifestyle and also my character. Having now spent 365 days away from the office I feel like I have learned more on the topic and grown more as a designer. So I wanted to share what I have learned over the last year when it comes to working remote.

I did a video 2 years ago while I was living in Hawaii still about working from home when your sick but I honestly was speaking from a place of limited inexperience. At that point of my life I had never worked for more than 2 days away from the office.

* Get up and get dressed
* schedule your day
* establish a designated work area
* turn off distractions
* take breaks
* don’t feel guilty
* Pomodoro technique
* set your hours and stick to them
* avoid interactions with family and friends
* get some face to face time
* reward yourself

Lesson 1
Working remote is less fun than it seems. Don’t do it because it’s fun, do it because it’s work.

Lesson 2
Working remote requires much more character, integrity, and moral fiber than working in an office.

Lesson 3
Working remote is a situational give and take. What you gain in personal freedom and lack of commute, you lose in privacy and autonomy of schedule (you get pinged on slack after hours…often)

Lesson 4
Working remote is lonely. There is no community, no coffee breaks with co workers, no shared experience. I know other designers who work on fully distributed teams or freelancers that sole work alone, but for people like me who work on teams that are anchored ion office and I’m the only remote worker, I feel like I miss out on so much of the group experience and there is no amount of video chatting that can remedy that.

Lesson 5
Working remote is a voluntary mind game. Guilt, grief, shame, anxiety, stress and burnout are all possible things you are diving head first into when you take on a remote job. Sure there is also freedom, contentment, focus, pride, inspiration, and satisfaction… but you have to be aware of both sides of the coin and be ready to combat the flip side on a daily basis.
