Deferred payment is a common promise in the startup world. Founders will offer future payment and stock for your initial work. Is it worth it? Is it safe?

In today's video, I talk about a recent client interaction where deferred payment was an option on the table and my thoughts on the topic. I also discuss my lack of business maturity, running a freelance design business and a book that is really helping me right now in this area.

I work full time as a designer for a tech startup but with my very limited free time I sometimes take on freelance work. I have some criteria a project has to meet for me to consider it.

1. Must be fun
2. Must pay well
3. Must involve cool people
4. Must be something I enjoy

When deferred payment is the form of payment on the table a 5th criterion is added on to the list:

5. Is it a good business / is it run by good business people?

I enjoy sharing the current events of my life as a remote designer so I think I am going to post more videos like this one.
